Devil's Fist

Devil's Fist is a unique geological landmark located at the end of Wong Chuk Kok Tsui (Bluff Head) in the Plover Cove Country Park, Hong Kong. It is part of the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark and is known for its remote and challenging accessibility. The name "Devil's Fist" comes from its distinctive shape, resembling a hand rising from the waves, with "fingers" formed by weathering and erosion along the sandstone bedding, and a "wrist" carved out by sea waves. This formation is one of the oldest rocks in Hong Kong, dating back to the Devonian period, approximately 400 million years ago.


Key Features

Geological Significance: Devil's Fist is a product of extensive weathering and erosion, showcasing the dynamic geological processes that have shaped Hong Kong's landscape.

Accessibility: The site is extremely remote and can be accessed via a long, informal coastal trail or more practically by boat. Hiking is not recommended for casual hikers due to the challenging terrain and distance.

Visiting Devil's Fist

Hiking Route: The hike spans about 30 km and can take over 10 hours to complete, starting from Wu Kau Tang and ending at Tai Mei Tuk Dam.

0 - 0.5 meters: Devil's Fist is completely exposed above the water surface (low tide).

0.5 - 1 meter: Devil's Fist is completely exposed above the water surface (receding tide).

1 - 1.5 meters: A small part of the base of Devil's Fist is submerged in water.

1.5 - 2 meters: The "fingers" of Devil's Fist remain visible, while other parts are submerged in water.

Devil's Fist (High Tide Version)

The Devil's Fist is best viewed at low tide, as the entire formation, including the "wrist," becomes visible. During high tide, the Devil's Fist may be partially submerged, obscuring the lower part of the formation. The surrounding red Devonian sandstone adds to the dramatic scenery, regardless of the tide.
