Where in Hong Kong do you run kayaking tours?

Splitdyboat runs kayaking tours in several main areas of Hong Kong, grouped by district and route type:

Sai Kung Volcanic Rock Region & Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark (Eastern New Territories)

Sharp Island, Bluff Island, Basalt Island, Long Ke Wan, Pak Lap, Kau Sai Wan and other bays and beaches in the Sai Kung Volcanic Rock Region.​ Offshore Geopark routes such as the North & South Ninepin Islands and surrounding volcanic sea arches and caves, reached by speedboat from Sai Kung or Clear Water Bay. On these remote routes (for example, the Ninepin Group kayaking tour), kayak tow service and speedboat transfers are already included to move you and your kayak safely to and between the key island destinations.​

Clear Water Bay Area (Sai Kung District, Kowloon East side)

Near‑shore, beginner‑friendly routes around Green Egg Island off Clear Water Bay, plus nearby coastal bays and beaches.​

Sai Kung Official Coral Area

The eastern side of Sharp Island (Sharp Island East) is one of Sai Kung’s most important and officially recognised high‑coral‑coverage zones, located inside Inner Port Shelter about 2 km off Sai Kung Town.​

Underwater ecological surveys show that coral coverage on the east side of Sharp Island exceeds 50–80% in key patches, dominated by fragile Pavona (cactus coral), brain corals and other hard corals, creating a rich habitat for reef fish and invertebrates and making it one of Hong Kong’s best‑known “high‑density coral hotspots” for snorkellers and divers.​

To protect this valuable coral community, a “no‑anchoring area” has been set up on the eastern side of Sharp Island, marked by four yellow “Coral Area” buoys which indicate that boats should not drop anchor inside the marked area, helping prevent anchors and chains from directly damaging the reef. This is also why, when visiting Sharp Island East for snorkelling or kayaking, guides place strong emphasis on following instructions and avoiding standing on or kicking corals, as part of responsible and sustainable marine tourism.​

How much actual paddling time is there? Will there be breaks or photo stops?

For every kayaking tour, there is a mix of active paddling and rest/photo time along the route. All tours include several short breaks for drinks, photos, and coach explanations at beaches, sea arches, or caves, so you are not paddling continuously for the whole tour.

Kayaking Tow Service

What is the Kayaking Tow Service?

In Hong Kong, “tow service” means our captain, helpers and guides will load your kayak onto the speedboat, transfer it by boat, and then launch you again at the destination or next section of the route. This is a logistical and safety support service, not just a rope tow behind another kayak.

Some of the kayaking tours operated by Splitdyboat in the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, including remote areas like the Ninepin Group, kayak tow/boat transfer is already included in the tour price, because these islands are far offshore from the city and require speedboat support to reach and move between key spots.

When would you use the tow service?

Our Tow / Speedboat Transfer is used:

  • To reach remote island groups efficiently from Sai Kung
  • To relocate kayaks between different sea arches, caves or bays when distances are too long or sea conditions change
    So you enjoy the best parts of the route without exhausting, exposed open‑water crossings.

Do I need to pay extra for tow service?

This kayak-tow service is only available on tours where it is explicitly included; on standard coastal/near‑shore kayaking tours, if you are unable to finish the route, we may not be able to arrange towing or early pickup (even at extra charge) due to fixed schedules and safety logistics.

If you are joining our kayaking tour routes such as the Ninepin Group and the Ung Kong Group, the answer is No, you do not need to pay extra for tow service. As for such Hong Kong Geopark kayaking tours with Splitdyboat. Kayak tow and speedboat transfer are already included for because these islands are far from the city and require boat logistics by default.​

Tow service in this context means our captain, helpers, and guides move your kayak by speedboat to or between islands, so you can focus your paddling energy on the most scenic sea arches, caves, and coastlines rather than long open‑water crossings.​

Does tow service mean I don’t need to paddle?

No. Tow service does not mean you can just sit back and skip paddling. All Splitdyboat kayaking tours still require your own effort and a basic level of fitness to enjoy the route safely.​

Speedboat transfers and tow service are there to handle long crossings and logistics around remote islands like the Ninepin Group, but you will still paddle your kayak for the scenic sections through sea arches, caves, and along the coastline.

Is tow service safe?

Yes, tow service on our tours in Hong Kong is completely safe, because it means moving kayaks by speedboat rather than dragging you in the water. Your kayak is fully loaded and secured on the speedboat, and you ride on the speedboat together with our captain, helpers, and guides while we transfer to the next island or section.

Can children or less confident paddlers request tow support?

No. For standard Splitdyboat kayaking tours, children and less confident paddlers cannot request extra tow support in the middle of the trip if it is not already part of the tour design.

For specific offshore “kayak + tow” routes such as our Ninepin Group Geopark kayaking tours, tow/boat transfer is already built into the itinerary and included for all participants. For normal coastal/near‑shore kayaking tours, you are expected to complete the route under your own power, and we may not be able to arrange towing or early pickup (even at extra charge) due to fixed schedules, safety cover, and boat logistics.

Safety & Fitness

Is kayaking safe in the Hong Kong Geopark?

Kayaking in the Hong Kong Geopark is safe when done on a guided tour like those operated by Splitdyboat with proper equipment, within suitable weather and sea conditions.

Certified operators like Splitdyboat use life jackets, briefings, small group sizes and pre‑planned routes to manage wind, waves, tides and boat traffic.​

The Geopark is still a wild marine environment, so tours only operate in appropriate conditions, avoiding strong wind, storms, typhoon or rainstorm signals, and carefully choosing landings because many rocky coasts have no facilities. Guests help keep things safe by following guide instructions, wearing their PFD at all times and choosing routes that match their fitness and experience level.

Is kayaking tour suitable for complete beginners?

Yes, many Splitdyboat kayaking tours are suitable for complete beginners, and no prior kayaking experience is required on our beginner routes. These tours use stable kayaks, start with a basic paddling and safety briefing, and are planned in relatively sheltered waters with plenty of breaks.​

You still need a basic level of fitness and comfort around water, as you will be paddling yourself for most of the trip and getting in and out of the kayak at beaches or rocky shorelines. If you are unsure whether to choose a beginner coastal route (e.g. Sharp Island / Green Egg Island area) or a more advanced Geopark line, contact Splitdyboat and the team can recommend the right level for you.​

Beginner Kayaking Route

Our “advanced” Geopark kayaking tours are still manageable for confident beginners, as routes are carefully designed, always guided by coaches, and only run when weather and waves are suitable.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer to join the kayaking tour?

You do not need to be a strong or fast swimmer, but you must be comfortable in the water with a life jacket on and able to do basic swimming or floating over short distances. On Splitdyboat kayaking tours, everyone wears a properly fitted PFD (personal flotation device), which keeps you afloat if you fall in, and coaches / guides are there to assist with getting back to your kayak or to a safe landing.​

Kayaking is not suitable for people who are very afraid of water or cannot tolerate brief immersion at all, as there is always a chance of getting splashed or, in rare cases, ending up in the sea. If you are unsure about your swimming ability, choose a beginner‑level, more sheltered route and let the team know in advance so they can advise whether the tour is appropriate for you.

Are there age, weight, or health restrictions for kayaking?

Yes, there are basic age, weight, and health restrictions for safety.

Children must meet the minimum age/size listed on each tour page and be accompanied by an adult where required.​ Generally, children aged 6+ can join our kayaking tours, but they must ride in a double sit-on-top kayak with an adult, and the adult should be ready to put in extra paddling effort to support them.

Kayaking is not recommended if you are pregnant or have heart disease, serious respiratory issues, spinal or joint problems, recent surgery, or other medical conditions that could be worsened by cold water, waves, or moderate exercise. Guests are responsible for ensuring they are fit to participate and should consult a doctor in advance if unsure, as the team may refuse participation on the day if it appears unsafe.

Equipment & Clothing

What should I wear and bring for a kayaking tour?

Wear light, quick‑dry clothing and aqua shoes.

Generally, for us Splitdyboat kayaking tour, we recommend:

  • Clothing: Swimwear or quick‑dry top and shorts, light windbreaker in cooler months, and a full change of clothes for after the tour.​
  • Footwear: Water shoes or sports sandals with good grip (no flip‑flops), as you’ll be walking on wet rocks and beaches.​
  • Essentials to bring: Drinking water, reef‑safe sunscreen, hat, sunglasses with strap, small snacks, waterproof phone case/dry bag, and mosquito repellent as listed in our Terms & Conditions and product pages.

What equipment do you provide and what's included in the kayaking tour?

Splitdyboat kayaking tours include professional coach guidance plus all essential paddling equipment.

Typically, your tour includes:

  • Professional coach / guide: Safety briefing, basic paddling lesson, route guidance, and geology/nature interpretation throughout the tour.​
  • All kayaking gear: Kayak (usually a double sit-on-top kayak, unless you are experienced and requested), paddles, life jackets/PFDs in various sizes, and when specified, snorkelling masks for kayak‑and‑snorkel products.​
  • Logistics: For Geopark routes, specified tours also include speedboat transfers and, where mentioned, kayak tow service between islands (e.g. Ninepin Group). Always refer to each product page for the exact inclusions of your chosen tour.

Can I bring my phone or camera? Do you offer photo support?

You can bring a phone or small camera at your own risk, but it must be in a proper waterproof pouch and secured with a strap or lanyard so it will not be lost or damaged by splashes and waves. All devices are carried strictly at your own risk and Splitdyboat is not responsible for any loss or damage. Very bulky or non‑waterproof cameras are not recommended on kayaks.​

All the Splitdyboat kayaking and Geopark routes, coaches help take photos or short clips from the kayaks or speedboat, and some tours specifically list “coach photography” as included in the package. However, please note that a kayaking tour is not a dedicated photography tour, so photo taking is secondary to safety and paddling; if you would like more photos, you are welcome to let the coach know on‑site during the tour, but availability and angles depend on conditions and guiding priorities.

Booking & Availability

Do you run kayaking tours all year round, or is it seasonal only?

Splitdyboat’s kayaking tours are mainly seasonal, running most frequently between March and November, when sea and weather conditions are generally more suitable for paddling in Hong Kong.

Outside this window, only limited or special‑arrangement tours may operate, depending on safety, sea state, and weather forecasts.

What is the minimum and maximum group size?

No minimum—even solo travelers (1 person) are welcome! We run shared tours daily with flexible capacity.

  • Small groups (1-9): Join our regular yacht tours—no minimum required.
  • Medium groups (10-20): Private tour available — perfect for families, events/companies.
  • Large groups (20+): Special arrangements are required, as each speedboat accommodates around 15–20 guests, and the coach‑to‑participant ratio is kept below 1:10 for safety and quality.

What if seas are rough on my kayaking tour day?

We monitor conditions 24 hours prior and cancel for safety if typhoon signals (No. 3+), Black rainstorms, or other unsafe weather apply—full refund or reschedule per Terms.

30 minutes early—late arrivals may forfeit spots (no refunds). Check-in via phone number or name at the meeting point.

What’s the weather cancellation policy for kayaking tour?

Full refund if we cancel due to unsafe weather.

We cancel tours for No. 3 typhoon signal or higher, typhoons, or extreme conditions like Black rainstorm warnings—full refund guaranteed.

.Activity Arrangements Under Thunderstorm Warning

Our company does not automatically cancel activities solely based on the issuance of a Thunderstorm Warning by the Hong Kong Observatory. Our instructors and captains will conduct a professional on-site safety assessment based on actual weather conditions at the time—including immediate wind and wave conditions, visibility, and the distance and frequency of lightning strikes—and reserve the final decision-making authority.

During the activity, if our instructors or captains determine that the weather conditions pose an immediate risk (for example, lightning or thunder occurring in close proximity), they will pause all water activities and instruct participants to return to the shore or to a safe area on the boat. Activities will only resume once the weather has been confirmed to be stable again.

Please note that no compensation or refund of any kind will be offered for any waiting time or interruption caused by the above weather-related reasons. Once the boat has departed or the activity has officially commenced, no partial or full refund will be provided—even if the activity must be interrupted or ended early due to subsequent weather changes.

However, if the activity has not yet departed and our instructors decide to cancel based on safety concerns, participants will be offered the option to reschedule or receive a full refund (please refer to our Cancellation Policy for full details).
