Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark covers about 50 km² in the eastern and northeastern parts of the territory. It comprises two distinct regions.
Sai Kung Volcanic Rock Region features exceptionally rare acidic volcanic hexagonal columns, averaging 1.2 metres in diameter. These formed about 140 million years ago when a supervolcano erupted and the thick ash layers cooled and contracted, creating the stunning columnar jointing that extends over 100 km².
Northeast New Territories Sedimentary Rock Region showcases a near‑complete sedimentary sequence from the Devonian to the Paleogene (roughly 400 to 55 million years ago). Here you find sandstones, conglomerates, mudstones, and fossil-bearing strata, alongside dramatic coastal landforms shaped by marine erosion.
