Kirin dance originated during the Tang Dynasty as a way for the people to express their longing for a prosperous and peaceful era. A popular folk saying goes: "When the people are troubled, the Kirin runs; when the world is harmonious, the Kirin dances." Legend has it that the Kirin dance was brought over by the Hakka people when they migrated from the Central Plains. The Sai Kung Kirin Dance, with over 100 years of history, is recognized as an intangible cultural heritage. This traditional art is passed down through the Zhu Family Mantis style.

    The tutor will introduce the Kirin’s rich history, explaining its cultural significance, colors, sizes, and symbolic designs. This session deepens understanding of the Kirin’s role in tradition and its artistic craftsmanship.

  • Traditional Steps in the Kirin Dance

    Such as Virtual steps and independent steps focus on individual footwork and balance. Dingzi steps (丁字步) form a stable T-shaped stance essential for movement. Half-bow steps combine strength and grace, creating fluid transitions in traditional Kirin dance and martial arts.

  • Traditional Head Movement in the Kirin Dance

    Involves powerful, expressive motions where the dancer controlling the head mimics animal-like gestures such as nodding, turning left to right, and lifting, symbolizing respect, strength, and alertness. These movements are coordinated with rhythmic percussion, requiring skill and endurance

  • Etiquette of Kirin and Kungfu

    The Kirin Dance Experience emphasizes (etiquette) — honoring tradition through respectful gestures, disciplined movements, and ceremonial practices. Participants learn the cultural significance of these rituals, fostering respect, harmony, and a deeper connection to this ancient art form.
