Introduction
The hexagonal rock columns, prominently displayed in Sai Kung, represent Hong Kong's most iconic and globally significant geological heritage. Sai Kung features an intricate coastline and numerous islands. Lacking natural barriers, the eastern coasts are continuously shaped by wind and wave erosion. This relentless environment perfectly reveals the grandeur of the hexagonal rock columns. Key areas for viewing these columns include Jin Island, Fa Shan on High Island, the Ung Kong Group, and the Ninepin Group. The coastlines are marked by steep cliffs, showcasing well-defined hexagonal rock columns and offering visitors stunning views of coastal erosion formations and breathtaking landscapes.
In October 2022, the Early Cretaceous rhyolitic columnar rock formation of Hong Kong Geopark was selected as one of the first 100 IUGS Geological Heritage Sites. This recognition signifies its global importance, as acknowledged by international scientific organizations as one of the world's 100 most vital geological heritage sites. Geology
About 140 million years ago, a supervolcano erupted in the Sai Kung region, resulting in the formation of a massive caldera spanning 18 kilometers. This eruption led to the deposition of molten volcanic material within the caldera, where, under stable environmental conditions, these substances cooled and contracted in a regular pattern. As the cooling process occurred, hexagonal fractures developed vertically, ultimately sculpting the volcanic materials into millions of hexagonal rock columns.

More About the Geology of Sai Kung Volcanic Rock Region
Today, these iconic hexagonal columns are widely distributed across the ancient caldera site, including areas such as the Ninepins, the Ung Kong Group, Tai Long Wan, High Island (which includes High Island Reservoir and Fa Shan), and Kau Sai Chau.
The hexagonal rock columns found in Hong Kong are distinct from similar formations globally, both in texture and chemical composition. While many hexagonal columns worldwide are composed of high-temperature basalt with low silica content, Hong Kong's formations are made of low-temperature, silica-rich rhyolitic volcanic rock. This unique composition makes the development of hexagonal columnar rock quite rare. The rock exhibits a complex texture that showcases characteristics of both lava and tuff, making it a globally significant example of Hong Kong’s geoheritage.
Despite enduring over 100 million years of weathering, some columns remain remarkably preserved, reaching thicknesses of up to 400 meters. The land and sea distribution of these formations spans over 100 square kilometers, with an average column diameter of 1.2 meters; some specimens even measure up to 3 meters in diameter. Additionally, certain islands and sea cliffs feature columns that rise up to 100 meters high. These formations are intricately linked with other coastal erosion landforms such as sea caves, sea cliffs, and sea arches, together creating a rare geomorphological landscape that stands as a world-class geological wonder.
