Hong Kong's First Dinosaur Fossil Discovery Attracts 40,000 Visitors in Two Months
In a remarkable display of public interest, Hong Kong's first-ever dinosaur fossil discovery has drawn over 40,000 visitors in just two months, announced by the Development Bureau of Hong Kong on 2/3/2025. The fossils, found on Port Island in the northeastern waters of Hong Kong, date back to the Cretaceous period, approximately 145 to 66 million years ago.
Background
The discovery was announced in October 2024, following a collaborative effort between the Development Bureau and the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology (IVPP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The fossils were initially identified as belonging to a large, mature dinosaur, with further research ongoing to determine the species.
Public Engagement
The fossils are on display at the Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui, where a "Dinosaur Parlour" has been set up. Visitors can observe experts from the IVPP preparing the fossils, providing a unique glimpse into the scientific process. This interactive approach has significantly contributed to the high visitor turnout.
Research and Collaboration
The Antiquities and Monuments Office (AMO), the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), and the IVPP are working together to excavate and study the fossils. This collaboration aims to shed light on the dinosaur's species and habits, contributing to a broader understanding of Hong Kong's ancient ecosystem. The findings will be peer-reviewed and published in academic journals.
Future of Hong Kong's Dinosaur Fossils
The immense public interest in Hong Kong's dinosaur fossils highlights the significance of this discovery, not only for the region's scientific community but also for its cultural and educational impact. As research continues, Hong Kong is poised to become a hub for paleontological studies in the Greater Bay Area.
