Po Pin Chau Guided Geopark Boat Sightseeing Tour:

Before You Arrive: What to Expect

"Forget the hiking boots. Leave the trekking poles at home. This isn't a sweaty climb up steep Geopark trails—it's a 2-hour speedboat adventure that takes you into the heart of Hong Kong's volcanic wonders, not just above them. While hikers peer down from distant clifftops, you'll be gliding beneath the very rock formations they can only squint at. Here's exactly how your Splitdyboat journey unfolds."

Step 1: Arrival & Check-In (15 Minutes Before Departure)

📍 Location: Sai Kung Seafood Street Archway, Sai Kung

Your adventure begins at the iconic Sai Kung Seafood Street Archway—a landmark as famous as the seafood itself. Arrive 15 minutes early to check in and meet your fellow explorers. Our friendly tour guide will greet you, confirm your booking, and hand out any necessary safety information.

Pro Tip: If you've chosen the Combo Package (land + water), this is where you'll receive your hiking route instructions for later—because we believe the best Geopark experience is one that gives you both perspectives.

Step 2: Safety Briefing & Speedboat Boarding (20 Minutes)

Before we hit the waves, we gather for a 20-minute briefing session right at the pier. This isn't just a boring safety spiel—it's where the magic begins.

During the briefing, you'll learn:

  • Safety First: Life jacket fitting, boarding procedures, and what to do if the waves get choppy

  • Geology 101: A quick primer on the 140-million-year-old volcanic rock you're about to witness up close

  • Route Preview: The 8 iconic attractions we'll visit, from High Island to Jin Island

  • Weather Update: If wave conditions are favourable, get ready for an extra thrill—crossing through the sea arches by speedboat (a bonus experience hikers will never get)

The briefing sets the stage so that when you see those hexagonal columns for the first time, you're not just looking—you're understanding. And yes, we'll also share the best angles for that Instagram-worthy shot. 😜

Step 3: Departure – The 90-Minute Sightseeing Voyage

"This is the moment hikers wish they could have." Once we cast off, the Sai Kung skyline fades behind you, and the rugged, otherworldly coastline of the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark rises before your eyes. Over the next 90 minutes, your expert guide will navigate you through 8 breathtaking attractions—each more spectacular than the last.

The 8 Attractions – A Guided Journey Through Volcanic History

Stop Attraction Name What You'll See
① High Island – Shore of Thousand Columns Your first jaw-drop moment. A shoreline packed with thousands of perfectly formed hexagonal volcanic columns—the largest such formations in the world. While hikers walk along the top of these columns, you'll be at their base, gazing up at nature's geometric masterpiece.
② Po Pin Chau – Organ Cliff The name says it all. The cliff face resembles a massive organ pipe—rows upon rows of tall, slender rock columns that tower above the water. From above, hikers see a jagged edge. From the boat, you see a cathedral of stone.
③ Po Pin Chau – God Cut Strait A narrow, dramatic channel carved between towering rock walls. As your speedboat glides through, you'll feel the power of the sea that sculpted this passage over millions of years. This is where the boat tour truly outshines any hiking trail.
④ Wang Chau – Little Taiwan Cave A hidden sea cave named for its resemblance to Taiwan's famous geological formations. Your guide will slow the boat so you can peer inside—a view no trail can offer.
⑤ Wang Chau – Sea Palace An enormous, cavernous opening in the cliff face that feels like a natural throne room. The interplay of light, shadow, and ancient rock will leave you speechless.
⑥ Basalt Island – Guan Dao Cave A dramatic tunnel-like cave that cuts clean through the island. If wave conditions are favourable, we'll do the unthinkable—cross right through it by speedboat. Hikers can only stare at the entrance from afar; you'll be inside the arch.
⑦ Bluff Island – Bluff Island Tunnel Cave Another spectacular tunnel carving through the island. The sheer scale is humbling—and the photo opportunities are unmatched.
⑧ Jin Island – Bell Cave The grand finale. A cave shaped like a giant bell, with acoustics that echo the ocean's roar. Your guide will share the local legends as you pause to absorb the serenity—and the majesty—of this final stop.

Step 4: The Bonus Experience (Wave Conditions Permitting)

🌊 "The moment hikers will never experience."

If the sea conditions play in our favour, your skipper will do something truly unforgettable: navigate the speedboat directly through the sea arches and tunnels—not just alongside them. Feel the spray of the sea as you pass through natural rock bridges, with towering cliffs on both sides. It's an adrenaline rush that no hiking trail—no matter how high—can replicate.

Important: This is a bonus, not a guarantee. Safety is always our first priority, and we'll only attempt this when conditions are safe and favourable.

Step 5: Return to Sai Kung (Approx. 10-15 Minutes)

After 90 minutes of jaw-dropping scenery, we cruise back to Sai Kung with the sun on your face and a camera roll full of unforgettable shots. Your guide will recap the highlights and answer any last-minute questions about the geology or the route.

Pro Tip: If you booked the Combo Package, this is where your water adventure ends—and your land adventure begins. Your guide will direct you to the starting point of the hiking trail (East Dam of High Island Reservoir) so you can now experience the Geopark from above and complete the full picture.

Step 6: Tour Ends – But the Memories Begin

You'll disembark back at Sai Kung Seafood Street Archway, exactly 2 hours after you started. But here's the difference between a Splitdyboat tour and a hiking trip: hikers return home with tired legs and distant photos. You return with the feeling of having been inside the volcano—up close, immersed, and transformed.

Quick Recap: The 2-Hour Flow

Time Activity
15 mins before Arrive at Sai Kung Archway, check-in
20 mins Safety briefing + geology introduction
90 mins Speedboat sightseeing (8 attractions + bonus arch crossing if possible)
10-15 mins Return to Sai Kung
Total: 2 hours Back at the archway with memories to last a lifetime

For Combo Package Bookers (Land + Water)

"Why choose between hiking and boating when you can have both?"

Our Combo Package is designed for adventurers who want the full Geopark experience. After your 2-hour speedboat tour, you'll receive directions to the High Island Reservoir East Dam—the starting point for the iconic Po Pin Chau hiking trail. Now, when you stand on the clifftop looking down at the sea arches, you'll recognize them from below. You'll have seen both sides of the same ancient rock. That's the difference between a tourist and an explorer.

"So, what's it going to be—sweating it out on the trail with a distant glimpse, or sitting back, speeding through sea arches, and coming face-to-face with 140 million years of volcanic history? Splitdyboat puts the choice in your hands. But once you've seen the Geopark from the water, you'll wonder why you ever considered hiking it alone."

For those who still want to lace up their boots and see the Geopark from above, here's a straightforward hiking guide to get you there.

Located near the East Dam of the High Island Reservoir in Sai Kung, Po Pin Chau (also known as 破邊洲) is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and hikers. This unique island, part of the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, offers breathtaking views and fascinating geological formations, making it a standout among Hong Kong's hiking trails.

P.S.: Although this guide focuses on "hiking in Po Pin Chau," it's essential to note that the actual hike takes place from the East Dam to a viewing platform on Fa Shan, which offers stunning views of Po Pin Chau. Historically, Po Pin Chau and Fa Shan were part of the same landmass. However, over time, relentless erosion by sea waves carved out a sea cave, eventually leading to the collapse of the connecting ridge and transforming Po Pin Chau into a standalone sea stack. Today, hikers can enjoy the breathtaking vistas of Po Pin Chau from the vantage point on Fa Shan, making this hike a unique experience that combines natural beauty with geological history.

Warning Before You Continue to Read

The hike to Po Pin Chau's viewing platform is not straightforward and can be challenging, especially for the elderly, due to steep and overgrown paths, it's also a 3 hours long hike on average or 5 hours including transportation time, so isn't suitable for travellers' fast pacing journey.  However, you can experience the breathtaking views of Po Pin Chau and other geological wonders in the Hong Kong Geopark by booking our Geopark Four Sea Arches Volcano Sightseeing Tour, which offers a safer and more accessible way to explore these natural marvels.
